History of the Château duGrand Morin

“Les Chauffours” takes its name from the presence of former Lime Kilns. It consists of numerous plots of land, bordered to the east, north and west by the Grand Morin River. The Board of Directors of Papeteries du Marais et de Sainte Marie acquired this area to establish a vast estate and build a residence for the mill manager.

The estate was sold to Mr. Griffault, a wealthy master wheelwright. During the First World War, the castle was requisitioned and transformed into a military hospital.

The religious institution Hosanna invests the Domaine de Chauffour and founds the Cité Notre-Dame. During the Second World War, the estate is occupied by the German Army. After the war, scouting activities declined, and the site was virtually abandoned.

In 1968, BNP bought the estate to turn it into a vacation center for children, managed by the BNP CCE. In 1999, the centennial storm destroyed almost 50% of the estate's tree population. A reforestation campaign was launched, partly financed by the French Ministry of Agriculture.

Taken over by the Domaines & Events group, the founder Nicolas Tommasini, with a wealth of successful experience in real estate and hotel development, decided on a mixed private/professional event positioning and to renovate the entire estate to have new rooms, gardens, rooms and parking. This new orientation aims to perpetuate the heritage of the Estate while integrating it into a modern and sustainable economic model.

The Estate is growing with the construction of a large reception room in the Castle, a swimming pool, terraces, a bar, new beds and sanitary facilities to offer unparalleled comfort and a high-end experience. Each room is carefully renovated, combining classic elegance with modern amenities.
To go further
Nestled in a loop of the Grand Morin River, the estate, formerly called “Les Chaufoures”, owes its name to the presence of ancient lime kilns. Its history dates back to 1875, when the Papeteries du Marais and Sainte Marie bought this space to build a house for their director.
Completed in 1883, the castle adopted a refined neoclassical style, a symbol of industrial prosperity. Over the decades, the field has undergone numerous transformations. It successively became a residence for notable people, a military hospital during the First World War, and then a religious center in the 1930s under the impetus of the Hosanna institution.
During the Second World War, it was occupied by the German army before being abandoned for several years.
On October 3, 1968, BNP bought it to turn it into a holiday center for children, managed by its works council.
In 2024, the domain was taken over by Domaines & Events. Respecting its history and its territorial roots, the castle adopted a new identity and became the Château du Grand Morin, in tribute to the river that crosses its domain. This choice reflects the desire to strengthen the link between the site and its natural environment, while affirming its belonging to the Grand Morin Estate, of which it is an emblematic place.
A complete renovation is launched to make the castle an exceptional place, suitable for weddings and seminars. Thanks to this transformation, the Château du Grand Morin is entering a new era, combining heritage and modernity, to host events in a refined and natural setting.
